Embroidery and Fabric Manipulation

Embroidery and Fabric Manipulation: Welcome

Colour Blocking

We were tasked with creating a patchwork piece, translating it into embroidery and then scaling it up to A3.The most impactful element of the project for me was learning to telegraph texture on different scales; using a dense satin stitch to mimic the couching I had done on the smaller piece, for example.

Texture Mimicry

I began researching heritage stitches and developing counted thread work techniques to mimic fabric textures such as knit, weave and herringbone. Looking at the structure of fabric through a microscope and sizing it up to explore its intricacies.

applique and collage

Through a mix of applique and trapunto, I was able to transpose some of my drawings and paintings to fabric, creating interesting textures and shapes as a result. I layered different fibres and weights to represent different mediums such as gouache, charcoal and ink.
